Dr. Paul Arciero

Dr. Paul J. Arciero (“Dr. Paul”) is a tenured, Full Professor of 18 years in the Health and Exercise Sciences department at Skidmore College. Dr. Paul specializes in performance nutrition and exercise training for optimal performance and health. Dr. Paul received his M.Sc. in exercise physiology from Purdue University in 1987, an M.Sc. in nutritional sciences from University of Vermont in 1993, a doctorate in physiology of exercise from Springfield College in 1993, and post-doctoral training in applied physiology from Washington University School of Medicine in 1994. He has been an active research scientist for over 25 years with particular emphasis on improving body composition, physical/athletic performance and optimal health.

Dr. Paul has provided nutritional and fitness counseling to thousands of individuals of all ages and abilities, from sedentary or diseased individuals to olympic and professional athletes, so he understands performance at every level of physical function. Currently, he is the Sports Performance Nutritionist for the AHL Adirondack Phantoms professional hockey team. He is an author/co-author of over 25 peer-reviewed scientific articles, including book chapters and invited reviews on sport/performance nutrition, physical activity, obesity and disease prevention, focusing on optimal health paradigms of healthy nutrition and exercise. Dr. Paul has presented his research at over 100 regional, national and international conferences, as well as at numerous other public forums.

He is a highly sought after TV, radio, newspaper/magazine and web personality including “The Today Show on MSNBC”, “WebMD”, “The Wall Street Journal”, “Prevention Magazine”, “Health Magazine”, “Shape”, “Women’s World”, and interviewed on Public Television and ABC-TV as an expert on Childhood Obesity and Nutrition for Olympic Athletes. He serves/has served as a reviewer for twelve medical science journals in the areas of sports nutrition, athletic performance, energy metabolism, obesity, and disease prevention. He was inducted as a Fellow of the American College of Sports Medicine in 1999.

In addition to his academic and scholarly activities in performance nutrition and exercise training, Dr. Paul is a certified yoga instructor and has taught yoga to thousands of individuals of all ages, both athlete and non-athlete and is a former professional tennis player and competitive runner, cyclist and triathlete.

NEWS FLASH: Dr. Paul Completes 150 Mile Single-Day Solo Ride...Again!

Dr. Paul RidesIn a performance that any "IronMan" would be proud of, Dr. Paul, at 48, repeated his single day, solo ride, which he last executed back in August of '94, which took him from Saratoga Springs, New York to Simsbury, Connecticut. The ride terrain is particularly challenging as it includes foothills of the Adirondacks and part of the Berkshire mountains, both beautiful and treacherous! Leaving out at 6:35am from his home in Saratoga Springs, Paul averaged just over 15 miles per hour to complete the ride in less than 10 hours!
